To address rising enrollment, Appoquinimink School District partnered with our team to design Lorewood Grove Elementary School in Middletown, Delaware.
Located on donated land within the Town of Whitehall, the new two-story, 840-student school is fully integrated into a planned community of interconnected villages and hamlets designed around walkability and smart-growth principles.
Its Federal-style architectural palette, featuring brick, stone, siding, gables, and porticos, complements surrounding homes while meeting New Castle County Smart Growth standards for walkable, energy-efficient density.
Purpose-built learning spaces
Inside, the floor plan prioritizes flexible instruction and specialized programming tailored to young learners:

Grade-Level Commons: Open gathering zones for each grade level support collaborative, group-based learning outside the traditional classroom.

STEM & Targeted Instruction: A dedicated STEM laboratory and small-group instruction rooms provide focused environments for hands-on discovery and intervention.

Performing Arts Focus: An outdoor stage extends the school’s robust language and performing arts curriculum into the fresh air.
Adaptable campus + connectivity
Because the school sits at the heart of an interconnected community, its design adapts as the neighborhood matures.
Sidewalks connect directly to the local pedestrian network, giving students safe walking routes to class. While current operations feature separate bus lanes and parent drop-off loops, these vehicular areas are designed to be repurposed for other campus uses as more families move in and the student body transitions primarily to walkers.
