Cool Spring Elementary School
More school, same tight site
Prince George’s County Public Schools is replacing Cool Spring Elementary School with a larger, three-story school designed to serve 900 students. Fitting it onto a constrained site in Adelphi, Maryland, while the existing facilities remain open shaped the project from the start.
Protected stream buffers and steep slopes reduce the buildable area even further. Our design responds by positioning the new school at the front of the property, allowing construction to move forward without interrupting daily operations in the existing buildings.
The right method for each space
The design combines two construction methods to make better use of the site and shorten the work performed there.
Crews will fabricate classroom sections in a controlled production facility before installing them on-site. Larger-volume spaces will use insulated concrete forms, or ICF, which create strong, energy-efficient exterior walls.
Together, these systems will accelerate construction, reduce activity around the operating school, and create a high-performing building envelope. Brick, split-face concrete masonry, and cementitious siding will give the new school a durable exterior that fits its surroundings.
Designed around the school day
Outdoor areas will give each age group space suited to its needs. pre-K classrooms will open to a dedicated courtyard, while separate play areas will serve kindergarten and older elementary students.
Inside, windows between classrooms and collaborative areas will create visual connections across the school. Energy-efficient exterior windows will bring natural light deeper into instructional spaces.
The cafeteria, gymnasium, and other program areas will support both school and community activities. Translucent insulated panels in the gymnasium and cafetorium will introduce daylight without the glare that can interfere with sports, performances, and other activities.
