Millmont Elementary & 6th Grade Magnet School
Historic character on a tight site
When replacing a beloved 1920s neighborhood landmark, the district faced a dual challenge: expand student capacity from 175 to 750 while fitting the entire footprint onto a tight two-acre triangular lot.
The new design honors the original building’s legacy by replicating its iconic historic entrance, blending deep-rooted community pride with a modern, high-capacity learning environment.
Underground parking + green infrastructure
To solve the tight urban footprint and maximize usable outdoor space, staff and visitor parking is tucked out of sight in an underground garage directly beneath the building structure.
To manage stormwater runoff on the compact lot, vegetated green roof systems were installed over the cafeteria and interior courtyard.
Dual “school-within-a-school” layout
The facility houses both a pre-K–5 elementary school and a 6th-grade magnet school under one roof, separating the two programs by floor level.
While each school has its own administrative suite, guidance offices, and media center, they share large assembly spaces like the gym and cafetorium. These spaces feature movable partitions for daily flexibility and security gates for after-hours community access.
Nine-day modular assembly
To minimize student displacement and compress the build time to a single school year, 67% of the structure was designed using permanent off-site modular construction.
Crews constructed the foundation and underground garage on-site while classroom modules were built off-site, allowing fully finished interior units to be set into place in just nine days.
