Benjamin Tasker Middle School
A permanent answer to a pressing need
Prince George’s County Public Schools needed to add classroom space quickly at Benjamin Tasker Middle School in Bowie, Maryland.
Early cost analysis showed that a permanent addition would cost less than relying on temporary modular classrooms. However, traditional construction would prolong activity on an operating school campus.
Our solution pairs permanence with speed. A two-story addition built largely off site will provide 10 new classrooms, complement the existing building, and significantly reduce construction time at the school.
Permanent, built off site
Off-site construction refers to where a building takes shape, not how long it will last.
Crews are building the two-story structure in a production facility, reducing construction activity at the school and accelerating installation. Each floor accommodates one of the school’s teaching teams, keeping related classrooms together.
Two classrooms expand to serve as science labs for up to 32 students. A new elevator and stair connect both floors and provide full accessibility.
Connected without getting in the way
On-site crews will construct the foundation and finish the addition with materials selected to complement the existing school.
The project team will use directional drilling to install new water and sewer lines without disturbing the busy bus lanes.
This approach keeps normal traffic patterns intact during construction and allows the new addition to connect directly to the existing building.
