Rainbow Elementary School

Prototype design + team teaching
Built to replace the original facility and serve 750 students, this replacement school was engineered to support the district’s elementary team-teaching model.
The building organizes classrooms into four grade-level pods with integrated special education spaces, where each learning lab features adjustable casework, adaptable markerboards, and mobile lab tables that can easily pivot between grade levels.
Designed using a PDE Clearinghouse prototype layout, the project secured an additional 10% in state reimbursement funding.
Cutting-edge instructional technology
Every learning lab is outfitted with advanced technology to create a flexible, wire-free learning environment. Mobile carts deliver wireless laptops directly to students, while an integrated video distribution system streams broadcasts to screens throughout the building.
By relying on robust wireless infrastructure, the design eliminated the need for fixed wall outlets and bulky storage units in individual classrooms.

Community amenities + neighborhood architecture
The spatial plan balances elementary needs with community use, featuring a large cafetorium with a dedicated public entrance and an independent 230-seat gymnasium built to host secondary basketball and volleyball practices.
To harmonize with the surrounding residential neighborhood, the building incorporates pitched roofs and traditional exterior detailing while concealing mechanical systems within attic spaces.
Sustainable systems + LEED Gold achievement
Under the hood, an energy-efficient geothermal HVAC system utilizes a wellfield tucked beneath the grass playfield, dramatically lowering energy costs and improving indoor air quality.
By pairing high-performance building systems with sustainable materials, the project exceeded its initial LEED Silver target to achieve LEED Gold certification, earning the district an additional 10% state reimbursement bonus.
