Bayard Rustin High School
Bayard Rustin High School is the third high school in the West Chester Area School District. In lieu of providing two mega high schools at their existing East and B. Reed Henderson High Schools, this new third high school allows for smaller classes, more opportunities for involvement in extra curricular activities, and provides a better learning environment for the students.
Set into the natural topography of the site, the school consists of a lower level, main level, and upper level. The lower level contains the gymnasium/locker rooms, kitchen/cafeteria, auditorium, media center, music, art technology education, business, and family consumer science areas. The main level contains the administration, guidance, nurse, computer labs, science labs, and general classrooms. The upper level houses an additional small administration area, computer lab, science labs, and general classrooms. All academic areas have been enhanced with the latest technology to facilitate the curriculum.
A VAV (variable air volume) system and ice storage system were designed as part of the mechanical systems.
The site amenities include a stadium, tennis courts, and athletic fields for baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, and football.
The exterior of the building consists of stone-like materials, brick, and sloping roofs to blend with the existing local rural residential architecture.
