NEW DESIGN TO ENHANCE THE EXISTING SPACE

A 1970s-era brick addition stood in stark contrast to the historic stone architecture of the Downingtown S.T.E.M. Academy in Downingtown, Pennsylvania.

To expand capacity for specialized instruction while honoring the local neighborhood context, Downingtown Area School District partnered with our team to design a seamless, modern addition that reflects the school’s high-tech mission.

Architectural alignment + contextual design

Symmetrical classroom additions extend from both ends of the building, concealing the 1970s brickwork and matching the setback of neighboring homes to reinforce local character:

  • Historic material matching: The primary facades use stone sourced directly from the original building’s quarry, matching its height, window proportions, and detailing.

  • Neighborhood integration: The expanded footprint respects the street-line patterns of the surrounding community while restoring a balanced, formal presence to the historic facade.

Letting in the light

Facing the main entrance, high-performance glass walls create a striking contrast that communicates the facility’s specialized STEM curriculum:

  • Sustainable reuse: The project maximizes energy efficiency and expands within a walkable, previously developed site to minimize environmental impact.
  • Daylight + reflections: During the day, reflective glass captures the surrounding neighborhood and historic stonework; at night, interior lighting reveals visible structural elements, mechanical systems, and active labs.
  • Infill atrium: A new sunlit central atrium provides versatile, flexible space for collaborative group learning and student gatherings.
